Eighteen and a half kilometers to enter the myth. On July 24 during the Gran Fondo La Marmotte organized by RCS Sport with start and finish in Sestriere, you will face one of the most famous climb across the globe: the Colle delle Finestre. Both those who choose the Medio Fondo (93 km with a cumulative elevation gain of 2400 meters) and those who opt for the Gran Fondo (117.7 km with a cumulative elevation gain of 3200 meters) from Susa will climb up to 2178 meters of the mountain which in 2015 was also the Cima Coppi of the Giro d’Italia.
What makes special the Colle delle Finestre are certainly the last 7.8 km of ascent to the summit, where the paved road gives way to dirt: respected as feared. Last year, even a top climber like Alberto Contador suffered the most beautiful part of the Finestre that will be prepared again for this special day.
“From Monday, in collaboration with the City of Sestriere and to Usseaux, we started the work. They provide us the material and we’ll stabilize and we level with a grader – explains the surveyor Umberto Clamps -. We’ll work during all this week and then, on the very eve of the race, 48 or 24 hours depending on conditions, we’ll roll the ground again to make the participants to ride in the best conditions, as happened in last year first edition of the Gran Fondo – and in the previous stage of the Giro».
